Animahenasyon 2010 is now accepting entries

The Animation Council of the Philippines, Inc. (ACPI) is calling all budding and professional animators from across the country to participate and submit their animated works to Animahenasyon 2010: 4th Philippine Animation Festival, as it formally opens and accepts entries to this year’s festival. Entry forms may be downloaded from the ACPI web site at <http://www.animationcouncil.org>. The deadline for submission of entries is on September 15.

Animahenasyon 2010 is co-presented by Ateneo de Naga University and will be held in this premier 3D animation school from November 23 to 26 in Naga City, Philippines. Holding the animation festival in Naga is part of ACPI’s thrusts to strengthen the regional animation of the country, and is also part of the Council’s year long 10th anniversary celebration.

In an effort to build an audience, awareness and development of original contents, ACPI puts together its flagship project through an annual animation festival called Animahenasyon that showcases original animated works of both aspiring and professional animators in the country through a competition.

The festival is composed of the professional and the student/amateur divisions that will have different running time categories: 1 to 5 minutes; 6 to 20 minutes, 21 to 60 minutes, and the full-animated feature (more than 60 minutes). There are also categories for music video, title sequence, public information, demo reel, and TV series. There will also be animated works in exhibition (full-length, special citation, and past Animahenasyon winners).

Last year’s grand prize winner of Animahenasyon was Mutya (Muse) by Nelson “Blog” Caliguia, Jr. It is a touching tale of an unlikely friendship between the forest spirits or “anitos” and a one-of-a-kind girl who can see them. It also tackles the timely issue of environmental degradation and the dire consequences of industrialization to the environment. “Mutya” also won the best animated short (6-20 minutes) in the professional division and was awarded the Hero TV’s choice for best capturing the theme “finding the hero within.”

Coming from a family of animators, Blog produced “Mutya” as a tribute for his late mother, Mina, who passed away in 2008. It is also largely based on the original story that his mom wrote. This is the second time that Blog won the grand prize in Animahenasyon. He first received this recognition in the very first Animahenasyon festival in 2007 for his entries “Inday Wanda,” and “Doodle of Doom” that he co-directed with Jason Confessor.

Animahenasyon serves as a venue for Filipino animators to present their world-class ideas, and opens doors of opportunities for them to meet with and be inspired by the finest names in the industry. It also aims to create greater awareness of the Philippine animation industry and its contributions to the global entertainment business, while tapping locally produced content for promotion in animation markets here and abroad.

ACPI's vision is to make Philippines as the prime provider of animation and content creation services to the global marketplace. On the other hand, ACPI's mission is to be the center of excellence for animation and content creation services through building more efficient and effective collaborative business practices that will elevate the country’s economy and culture.

As an organized body, ACPI aims to promote the Filipino talent both locally and internationally. With the cooperation of its members as well as the Philippine government, it is envisioned that the member studios and schools will be considered competitive both creatively and technologically.

ACPI is a non-stock and non-profit organization whose member companies specialize mainly in, but not limited to, 2D, Flash or 3D animation. It aims to promote the animation industry globally with the intention of creating an identity for the Philippines to be considered amongst the preferred countries that service the animation industry.

For more information about Animahenasyon 2010, please call 483-9501, 8172727 local 108 or email the secretariat at animationcouncil@gmail.com, or visit www.animationcouncil.org.

The Canvas Project 3

Another opportunity for our visual artists to showcase their talents. A second volume of a visual encyclopedia is already in the wings and this is the opportunity knocking on the artists' doors. I am curious about this project, honestly. I want to see how different people with different cultural, economic and political backgrounds will interpret words that are "universally"familiar.

"The first volume was exhibited at the Hartsfeld-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta, GA from July to September of 2009 as well as turned into the first volume of the book.

For more details, click this.

Sign-up deadline: June 29, 2010.

And if you are lucky, one of your works will be on exhibit by December 3, 2010.

The time for the national elections—where people are hopeful to elect leaders that would serve their interests. The worsening economic crisis that have dragged down living conditions. Table for Two By Marla Miniano

Treat yourself to a tale filled with breakups, hookups, and more from the author of the Every Girl's Guide series.

In Table for Two, a corner table at a quiet coffee shop takes center stage, the latest release from Summit Books author Marla Miniano. The table is the setting for pivotal moments in the lives of the main characters—who, as it seems, are quite the lovelorn bunch. First, there’s the long-time couple on the verge of calling it quits after college graduation. Then there’s the serial dater who accepts her younger brother’s challenge to go dateless for two months. There’s also a photographer who attempts to dissuade his best friend from getting married (and we’re curious to find out why). And finally, there are the two hopefuls: a young man who meets with the girl he never stopped loving, and a young lady who pores over romance novels, waiting for her turn to fall in love.

Cosmopolitan praises Miniano for creating a “romantic yet very real world” in her latest piece of chick lit. Indeed, who doesn’t love a story where everything—and everyone—is connected? And if you aren't yet convinced that this fresh-off-the-presses paperback should be your next book buy, check out the excerpt for a sneak peek at this light and romantic read.

Excerpts from the Meloto Sisters Interview

Sisters Anna Meloto-Wilk and Camille Meloto: Practicing Social Enterprise with Human Nature

They’ve just broken into the US market with their all-natural, pro-Pinoy personal care brand--and the two Meloto sisters show no sign of slowing down. By Stephanie Castillo

Meloto_sisters_article_1.jpg

Socially responsible sisters Camille (left) and Anna (right) Meloto

Anna Meloto-Wilk and Camille Meloto aren’t your average sisters—and it isn’t just because their father is Gawad Kalinga creator Tony Meloto. Beyond their famously philanthropic bloodline, Anna, 30, and Camille, 23, are making a name for themselves in both local and international trade with their all-natural personal care brand, Human Nature. The brand’s claim to fame? It’s 100 percent organic, 100 percent chemical-free, and 100 percent Philippine-grown—not to mention incredibly affordable.

In an age when going organic has developed into a sustainable lifestyle, rather than an idealistic trend, Anna and Camille’s vision to make the country as eco-friendly and socially-responsible as possible is fast taking shape. As Human Nature expands its reach from the Philippine shores to several states in the US—and hopefully, to other great nations in the Orient—what was once a casual idea has now turned into a thriving social enterprise, more concerned with pro-human practices than it is with profit.

In this exclusive interview with Female Network, the marvelous Meloto sisters discuss the urgency of going green (even if that means doing everything “old school”) and demonstrate the winning dynamic between two siblings that can make a business prosper. Read on!

FN: What made you decide to go into business together?

Anna: It wasn’t a very difficult decision; it just evolved very naturally. We were thrown together with no one else to turn to in the US when my husband (Dylan Wilk, once the 9th richest man in England and now a leading advocate for Gawad Kalinga) was assigned there for a year. One thing that we’re both very interested in is cosmetics and beauty products, and [Camille] has actually been into makeup since she was a kid. She was applying lip balm and lip gloss as early as second grade!

Being in the US [exposed us to] a cosmetic haven, because there are so many new things that you can try out... especially natural products. [Here in the Philippines], what was frustrating and disappointing was that the natural products were all so expensive, and even if you had [enough] income it just didn’t feel right to keep buying overpriced products, [since it] didn’t seem sustainable. So my sister and I were really surprised when in the US we saw firsthand all the natural products available in drug stores and in groceries—with price points that were similar to commercially available, affordable, synthetic products.

At that time I had been out of the corporate world for maybe two years already and I was really itching to start working again but not in a corporate setting. My sister, on the other hand, was a fresh grad. So [when we got the idea of making our own natural product line], it was really a coming-together of different but shared interests, a bonding experience for me and my sister.

When we got back to the Philippines, we didn’t let go of that idea, and we [eventually] launched Human Nature in November of 2008. It’s barely been two years and right now we already have over a hundred SKUs, 7000 dealers, 12 branches, [including outlets] in the US—and just last month we sold our millionth product!

FN: Tell us about Human Nature. What sets it apart from other green brands?

Anna: Our biggest selling point when we were brainstorming about [the brand] is that we wanted it to be pro-Philippines. We were deliberate in the sense that we wanted to use ingredients and raw materials that can be grown in the Philippines, because our vision is to eventually source everything from the Philippines. When we started looking at the ingredients [of all the natural products in the States], we noticed that there was always a lot of coconut oil—and the Philippines is one of the top exporters of coconut oil in the world, so what’s preventing us from coming up with these products ourselves?

Currently we source a lot of [ingredients] locally but we also have to import some raw materials because they’re not available here. From abroad we source natural preservatives like sunflower oil—but we also make it a point to come up with products that contain virgin coconut oil, citronella, and lemongrass because those are all available in the Philippines. We also use guava, eucalyptus, rose berry, [and other] herbs that are grown here.

We want to educate communities to grow [these materials as a] business… to provide themselves with a sustainable lifestyle. In fact, on May 8, [we did] our soft launch with the first Human Nature demo farm in Bulacan.
